| Figure 1: Different Perspectives |
Placing focus back on the network of on campus college that I have been analysing, to think about the imagined geography and meanings associated with different places within the network has not been something to frequently cross people’s minds. That is to say, although everyone within on campus college network, including myself, may all live together and call the overall space home, certain areas of the space geography have different meanings to each individual. this then goes to make these certain areas of the space, now a place and is affected by the purpose it is given.
The idea of of these conclusions link both directly weeks 3 and 4 lectures, as well as week 4’s set reading on maps. Within the on campus college network I reside in, the community is quite ethnically diverse with many different cultures rom both Australian residents and international students, with a small group within the community of residents of the same culture grouping together to form a network within the network. This small network prefers to spend time mostly with each other, and occupy a certain space of the campus network frequently, creating a place for themselves which serves them a purpose.
In relation to Wood, Ward and Abramms (2001, pg.5) who speak of all maps having a purpose, even the most basic of places among the college network that may seem unimportant to a majority of the network community serves a purpose to this ‘mini network’ because of their perspective. “Every map has a purpose.” (Wood, Ward & Abramms, 2001, pg. 4), and like every map has a purpose, everywhere with the on campus network space has a purpose to become a place, it just needs to be given one.
